Little Topic: Subscriptions and other tools of the trade

  1. AOPA - Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association - free 6 month membership has benefits! (Including $10 off the official written test)
  2. ForeFlight - valuable tool (requires iPad or iPhone)
    - Alternatives available, but not as robust IMHO: Garmin Pilot, Seattle Avionics, FlyQ, Avare (great for Androids)
    - You may also use paper products - cheapest is about $7.70 per sectional chart; renews every 6 months
    - May need several charts for a single cross-country flight
  3. https://www.faa.gov/mobile/
  4. Printed material (can order hard copy, or click links for electronic versions, or load into and view from ForeFlight
    1. FAR/AIM - Federal Aviation Regulations and Aeronautical Information Manual (many written test questions come from this book - good to have a paper copy and mark it up)
    2. Student Pilot Guide
    3. Airplane Flying Handbook
    4. Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
    5. Airman Certification Standards (ACS) - these are the strict parameters by which your check flight will be judged
    6. Tips on Mountain Flying
    7. Weight & Balance Handbook
  5. Headset (rented for $3/flight by Platinum) - you'll eventually want your own - ask for one for your birthday or Christmas!
    1. Look for Active Noise Reduction (ANR) - $400 - $1200
  6. Logbook ($13 from Platinum) - used for logging flight time and essential instructor endorsements
    1. ForeFlight already contains this feature electronically and eliminates manual addition errors!
  7. E6B flight computer (electronic phone app or "whiz wheel")
  8. Sunrise/Sunset mobile phone app
  9. intelliPilot electronic logbook (if you don't use ForeFlight)
  10. Sunglasses (non-polarized) & flashlight

HOMEWORK: 1. Sign up for FREE membership in AOPA, then take their General Aviation Security Awareness Course

(bring printed certificate of completion for me to sign)

                              2. Next set of practice questions: DUE THURSDAY: 3 questions: Sections J28, J33 - take it until you get 100%
